Panforte is a dense fruit, nut and honey cake from Sienna whose history is often disputed. Tales of panforte originating sometime in the 1200's include a nun who, in finding sugar, nuts and fruit at the bottom of a cupboard; concocted this heavily fruit and spice laden dessert by the alleged suggestion of the devil. She later defeated the Evil One by dumping this hot mixture over his head. The heavenly sweet smell that permeated the kitchen led to a tasting that started a Christmas tradition.

Others claim Panforte is as old as Christ Himself. The story of a small boy who could not afford a gift for the infant Jesus, tells us of how he offered the crust of a piece of bread to Joseph. Joseph in turn gave the crumb to a bird and the boy trodded home, forlorn that his gift was not rich enough for the Baby Jesus. Upon entering his home, he was greeted with a lavish feast. Platters of food surrounded a rich pastry made of honey, almonds and candied fruit. Many claim this abundant feast was left in thanks for the boy's gift to Christ.

Panforte has become a traditional Christmas treat over the centuries. While its origins are unknown, we do know that it is heavenly when sliced thinly and eaten with a glass of Vin Santo or a cup of espresso. The chewy and moist spiced cake is often served during the holidays but can be found year round in Italy.

Panforte's ingredients are almonds, orange and citron, candied rind, sugar, wheat flour, honey, starch, rice paper and flavorings.

Each Panforte Margarita weighs approximately 9 ounces (225 g) net weight and is imported from Italy.
