The Deruta Photo Collection
Deruta, Italy is the official home of the distinctive style of
pottery known as Maiolica.
Maiolica is a twice fired earthenware made of a very fine, extremely
durable red clay from the Mediterranean area. After the first firing,
glazes (first white creating a "canvas", then colored
decorations) are applied by hand and then fired again at 1820 degrees
Fahrenheit. Most of the patterns are of classic origins, sometimes
dating back to the Renaissance.
Many small factories produce a wide variety of unique patterns.
During our visit to this unique town, we were permitted to view the
factories and design shops, but were hesitant to take photos of the
unique designs due to proprietary and competitive reasons. As a
result, this collection is smaller in size than the others and limited
to external photos of the Maiolica factories and shops in Deruta.
We offer Deruta made Maiolica products in our store's Maiolica Aisle. Be sure
to visit it! |
